You probably already know that money, or lack of it, is the no.1 killer of relationships. The hurt of not providing for your family cuts deep in your soul…
I don’t know about you…
But I used to always worry about money.
I’ll tell you a short story to explain why.
A few years ago now, I was out on the town for a friend’s birthday.
We’d all decided to turn up at this fancy restaurant downtown, and then venture on for a few drinks after.
We were all told, we should bring one extra person…
Single if possible…
So, I decided to bring a mate of mine, Tony, who I knew was definitely single, and could do with cheering up.
He had just signed his divorce papers about 5 months before, and I don’t think he’d been out for a good night since.
So, I thought he could definitely do with a good ‘ol knees up.
Now come to think of it, Tony’s relationship also turned sour due to money issues, but that’s a story for a different time.
Anyhow, back to this birthday night.
I agreed to meet Tony an hour earlier, so we could have a few drinks…
Perhaps get in the mood…
Drum up a bit of ‘Dutch Courage’ so to speak.
As Tony had barely talked to a girl since his divorce, and probably not chatted up a girl for years…I suggested he make a move on our waitress.
Nothing too strong…just to get into the flirty mood.
As he was chatting away to her, it dawned on me that I should probably do a bit of ‘prep flirting’ too.
But then suddenly, Tony reminded me of the time, and that we were already late.
We downed our drinks, paid the bill and headed for the birthday venue.
When we arrived, we could see there was already a fair size bunch of people present.
But one set of eyes locked on to mine almost immediately.
This girl was stunning, in a gorgeous velvet red top and a short black skirt that barely covered her beautiful tanned legs.
I could see she was my spec straight away. There would be no debating over this lovely gal.
To cut a long story short, we spent most of the night side by side, and had a fantastic evening.
It was the best night I’d had in a long time in fact.
We had such a laugh together. Not just because she looked so great but her humour was as awesome as her personality.
I thought I’d struck gold.
And there I was trying to help get Tony hooked up…and then I was the one meeting the girl I hoped would be part of my life for a long time to come.
At the end of the night, we promised to keep in touch.
I was dying to call her the next day, but I kinda wanted to see if she called me…
And half wanting to not seem so desperate.
We gotta play it a little cool, right?
I didn’t want to stuff this one up so soon.
But after 3 days she hadn’t called.
So, I called her. No answer. I left a message.
One more day turned to two. Still no reply.
So I tried to call her again. No reply. Another message. No reply.
In the end, I called Jenny whose birthday party we met at.
I explained the situation to her. And she said she would try find out more info.
A day later Jenny told me the dreaded news.
“She doesn’t want to lead you on. But she thinks you wouldn’t be able to provide for her sufficiently.”
Wow! I thought.
Wow! Because at least she was being honest with me.
I found out later she’d asked a few friends about my financial situation.
Admittedly, at that time I wasn’t earning much. No way near as much as I am now.
I was pissed for sure.
But that let down set a rocket up my booty to get my life in order.
And that kicked started my entrepreneurial journey and what led me to copywriting.
Now, my life has taken a complete 180-degree turn.
I’m no longer stressed about money…
I feel proud to be the provider for my family…
And for the first time in a long time…
